Many mild cases of Sleep Apnea can be treated by losing weight, changes in frequency and intensity in exercise, breath work, reducing alcohol consumption, stopping smoking, and more.
If a patient’s Sleep Apnea is significant enough that behavior changes alone are not effective, the typical treatment for Sleep Apnea is the use of a CPAP machine or similar device to help regulate a patient’s breathing while they sleep.
Available only with a prescription, CPAP machines have continued to evolve along with other medical technology, and have become easier than ever to use. Your provider will be able to recommend a CPAP device that is most compatible with your lifestyle, and will be covered by most insurance plans. Prescriptions are also available for oral appliances if applicable.
In very rare or extreme cases, or for patients who are unable or would prefer not to use a CPAP device or other device, Circle Medical providers can make an appropriate diagnosis and refer the patient out to an appropriate specialist.
Once you have chosen and started a treatment plan, your provider will prescribe a follow-up sleep study to confirm that your treatment is working.

Sleep Apnea is very common, and affects nearly 1 billion people across the world each year. In the US, 25-30% of men, and 9-17% of women are estimated to have obstructive Sleep Apnea. While men are more likely to be affected than women, it can be much more common during and after pregnancy, and as we age. Other significant factors that contribute to Sleep Apnea include:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when your airways become blocked during sleep. Typical symptoms include being tired during the day (despite adequate hours of rest), trouble staying asleep at night, headaches or dry mouth in the morning, and excessive or loud snoring that includes moments of gasping for air (these are usually observed by sleeping partners).
It is important to note that not all of these symptoms may present in a person who is experiencing Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea often affects people who are not obese, for example. Additionally, up to 20% of patients who have Sleep Apnea do NOT snore. (Snoring in and of itself is not always associated with Sleep Apnea.)

Not at all. It is a small device that you can easily attach painlessly. The companion smartphone app includes detailed, easy to follow instructions for use, and will send the recorded data back to Circle automatically.

Your sleep results will be reviewed by a board-certified sleep specialist, who will then work closely with your Circle Medical provider to create your personalized treatment plan.
Most people find it far more comfortable to sleep in the comfort of their own bed in their own home, where your sleep patterns will much more closely match your typical sleep cycle than they would when you sleep in a clinic that is new to you. The device you will receive will also allow you to perform multiple studies, and all at a small fraction of the typical cost of an in-clinic sleep study.

You do not need to book your initial appointment with a doctor. You can book your appointment with any provider that we have available. Our providers all work closely together to make sure that we are providing the same excellent standard of care to all patients regardless of which provider you book your appointment with.
Circle Medical is a primary care practice, which means that the only fee due to us is the cost of the appointment itself. We accept insurance, so your plan may pay some or all of the appointment fee. Circle does not charge any ongoing membership fees to use our platform.
If you are prescribed medications, you will pay for them when you pick them up at a pharmacy.

We contract with most PPO insurance plans. If you are a California Bay Area resident, we also work with a small number of HMO plans.
To verify if we work with your insurance, simply start booking an appointment online. You will be prompted to enter your insurance details and will receive eligibility results instantly as well as an estimate of your appointment cost prior to confirming your appointment.

Our insured patients pay an average of $5-$50 per appointment.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide care for patients who have Medi-Cal or Medicaid insurance. This is because we are not licensed Medi-Cal or Medicaid providers, so we are not able to provide care, even if these patients choose to pay cash instead of use their insurance. If you have Medi-Cal or Medicaid, please do not book an appointment with us, as we will be unable to provide care even if you do not enter your insurance information.

We also offer a self-pay option at a flat rate of $100 per appointment.
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where your breathing stops and starts throughout the night. It can be classified into three different types, including:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep apnea. It happens when the muscles in your throat relax during sleep This causes blockage in your airways. This can lead to sleep interruptions and awakenings throughout the night that impact your overall sleep quality. You may not even be aware of these awakenings.
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) happens when your brain fails to signal breathing muscles. This leads to periods during the night where breathing stops and starts.
Positional sleep apnea occurs when a person's breathing difficulties during sleep worsens when they are in certain positions, such as lying on their back (supine position), and may improve when they sleep in other positions, such as on their side (lateral position).
In previous years, you would have to go to an in-person sleep clinic to diagnose sleep apnea. You would sleep overnight at the clinic for a sleep study. This allowed a sleep specialist to monitor your sleep patterns and diagnose your sleep disorder. Fortunately, technology has advanced to allow us to conduct sleep studies at home. After connecting with an online healthcare provider like Circle Medical, you can get an at-home sleep study sent to your house. You’ll receive a simple device that monitors your sleep. This data is sent directly to your provider and you can get your diagnosis without having to leave your home. Once diagnosed with sleep apnea, your healthcare provider can determine an appropriate treatment plan.
Sleep apnea can be caused by a variety of factors, and evidence suggests that there may also be a genetic or hereditary link. If you have sleep apnea in your family history, your risk for developing the condition may be higher. However, environmental and lifestyle factors also are attributed to sleep apnea. Obesity, alcohol consumption, and smoking can all increase the risk of sleep apnea.
Snoring is one of the primary symptoms associated with sleep apnea. However, it’s not a guaranteed telltale sign. Some people may snore and not have sleep apnea. Likewise, some people with sleep apnea may not have snoring as a symptom. Sleep apnea is characterized by breathing interruptions during sleep, which may simply cause someone to wake frequently or have trouble sleeping. For instance, if someone always wakes up feeling tired or fatigued, but they don’t snore, it’s possible they may have sleep apnea.
